Our team—including our baristas—is involved with things that range far beyond making coffee and food—marketing, social media, photography, design, community outreach, event planning and management, cocktails, merchandising, coffee production, and operations management just to name a few. What we do is very difficult to be sure—but if you have the right attitude and truly want to work hard to build something special—we probably have a spot for you. We're not a typical restaurant. We're a family and employee owned and operated coffee company and cafe--so you'll have the opportunity to learn everything from coffee and cocktails to event planning, coffee production, merchandising, wholesale and small business management. Carnegie Mellon University
Barista/Cashiers (non-students)
Full-time
$11 (+ tips and $1 bonus per hour for CMU specific hours)
Our CMU location is a high-volume cafe serving mainly students and professors. If you are interested in learning how a high-volume cafe runs from the ground-up, this is the opportunity for you! Our baristas/cashiers stock shelves, do dishes, take photos, invent recipes, make cocktails, haul stuff, create coffee recipes, run events, and solve problems too—though that is still just a fraction of what goes on during a typical shift. ALL employees at De Fer have the opportunity to grow beyond into other areas of interest in the industry like photography, marketing, management, finance—whatever could interest you.

This job title really isn’t very accurate. We’re a small company, and EVERYONE wears tons of hats. Our baristas, are of course also cashiers. They also stock shelves, do dishes, take photos, invent recipes, make cocktails, haul stuff, create coffee recipes, run events, and solve problems too—though that is still just a fraction of what goes on during a typical shift. This position starts at $11 an hour plus tips and our list of benefits listed below.
There will also be opportunity in the future to grow beyond this position into general management, marketing, finance--whatever could interest you. We are not a coffee shop, we are a coffee company--and all the functions that exist at larger companies exist at De Fer, albeit on a smaller scale.
