Sakura Bashi (De Fer x Tekko)

from $12.00

Sakura Bashi (サクラ橋—Cherry Blossom Bridge) is our little love note to Japan, Pittsburgh, and our friends the world over. Bursting with the delicious possibilities of delicate blooms, crisp mornings, and good conversation, this cup is an ode to coffee’s power to bring us together—even when we’re oceans apart.

We crafted this blend with Tekko as a way to celebrate its 2026 run. The convention takes its name from the Japanese term for steel- or ironworking—鉄工 (tekkō), a loving nod to the Steel City that it’s called home for over twenty years. And, in a small twist of fate, this is one piece of common ground between us—De Fer is a shortening of the French atelier de fer—literally “iron workshop”.

But the similarities don’t stop there. Part of our mission has always been to enrich our community with welcoming and inclusive spaces that encourage meaningful connection. In much the same way, Tekko strives to provide a safe space for anyone to find their tribe and celebrate shared interests. While a pop culture convention and a third-wave coffee outfit might not seem like an obvious pairing, we found a shared mission and love for our city that ultimately led us to Sakura Bashi.

We hope you love drinking it as much as we loved creating it.

The Coffees
Kenya - Muinami Estate:
Muinami Estate is the local name for what Stephen Nendela himself calls Nawiri, the 26-acre farm in the Cherangani Hills that he began rebuilding after the success of a smaller six-acre sugarcane-to-coffee conversion he started with his mother near Eldoret in 2015. Muinami is Stephen’s family name, meaning “those who work,” while Nawiri means “prosperity”—both suit the place. At roughly 1,900 meters, with forest interspersed and brisk overnight temperatures for much of the year, there is a palpably cooler microclimate here than elsewhere in the West. Of the 26 acres, about 14 are under coffee, with the balance dedicated to agroforestry, beekeeping, nursery space, and the broader farm system that Stephen and his farm manager, Linet, continue to build out.

Colombia - Jairo Arcila:
Jairo Arcila is a third-generation coffee grower from Quindio, Colombia. He is married to Luz Helena Salazar and they have two children together, Carlos and Felipe Arcila. Jairo’s first job was at Colombia’s second-largest exporter, working as their Mill Manager for over 40 years until his retirement in 2019.

Jairo has received great advice and guidance from his sons who are now experts in producing Specialty Coffee. With their help, Jairo has greatly improved the picking, sorting, and processing of his coffees. His sons have also guided Jairo in the production of exotic varieties. He now grows varieties like Pink Bourbon, Java, Papayo ,and Gesha growing across his farms. The guidance from his sons has empowered Jairo and given him the tools needed to produce fantastic coffees with amazing flavor profiles.

PROCESSING
Different processing methods were used for each coffee that makes up this blend.

Washed - Coffee is washed at washing station and left to dry on raised beds until ideal moisture content is achieved.

Honey Process Wine Yeast+Strawberry Co-Fermentation - Coffee is exposed to a dry anaerobic fermentation for a period of 72 hours with the pulp on. During this stage ripe strawberries and wine yeast are added. Cherries are then pulped removing the outer skin, keeping the mucilage intact (honey process) and placed on raised beds to dry until the ideal moisture content is achieved.

50¢ from the sale of all coffee bags go to Angels’ Place - A Pittsburgh based non-profit that cares for the children of single parents who qualify as low-income. This enables the parent to continue their own education or career, benefiting both generations.

SHIPPING: We ship orders Monday - Friday. Order cutoff is 11:59pm to be shipped the NEXT shipping day. If you ever feel your coffee is not fresh enough, just let us know and we’ll replace it.

Domestic shipping is free for orders of $50 or more. Otherwise, it is a $7.50 flat rate anywhere in the US. We ship everything via UPS Ground.

NOTES ON GRINDING: If you choose “French Press” grind, expect it to be finer than usual, so you’re guaranteed good extraction. Some ultra fine coffee particles will make it through the screen and create a flavorful, albeit slightly opaque cup. In other words, we choose flavor over aesthetics. If you want to keep your cup looking cleaner, choose a pour over grind.

If you don’t see your preferred grind in the options then simply let us know in the notes section at checkout and we’d be happy to grind it for your favorite brewing method.
