Sons of Vulcan

from $10.00

Of our blends, this is our lightest and most complex blend. That is not to say it’s light on flavor. We use three different, independently-delicious coffees to create a truly unique mega-complex coffee that shines as espresso and drip alike. We wanted this espresso to taste like a chocolate blueberry cupcake, so we used a well-balanced Colombian for the cake, a naturally-processed Brazilian for the deep chocolate/toffee flavors and a lively Ethiopian for the blueberry crumbles on top.

MORE ABOUT THIS COFFEE
Named for the Roman god of fire, the Sons of Vulcan was one of the first steel-industry labor unions in the United States. Officially called ‘Iron City Forge of the Sons of Vulcan,' the union was founded on April 12, 1858, at a secret meeting of a group of iron ‘puddlers’ at a hotel bar in downtown Pittsburgh. Puddlers had one of the most skilled, dangerous and physically demanding jobs in the steel making process—having to stand over molten pig iron and stir with iron bars in order to infuse air into the molten mixture, which will allow the carbon in the iron to oxidize and burn off—thereby refining the pig iron into steel. Predating chemical testing—it was up to the puddlers to rely on experience and expertise to know when the right level of carbon had been removed. Puddlers were also responsible for removing slag and draining and moving molten steel out of the furnaces. It’s easy to see why by the 1870’s, there were one of the strongest unions in the US, eventually merging with the Amalgamated Association of Iron and Steelworkers—which would eventually become the United Steelworkers Union—the largest labor union in North America with over 1.2 million members today.

50¢ from the sale of all coffee bags go to Angels’ Place - A Pittsburgh based non-profit that cares for the children of single parents who qualify as low-income. This enables the parent to continue their own education or career, benefiting both generations.

SHIPPING: We ship orders on Tuesdays and Fridays. Order cutoff is 12pm the day PRIOR to the ship day. We do our best to ship your coffee within two days of roasting it. If you ever feel your coffee is not fresh enough, just let us know and we’ll replace it.

Domestic shipping is free for orders of $50 or more. Otherwise, it is a $7.50 flat rate anywhere in the US. We ship everything via UPS Ground.

NOTES ON GRINDING: If you choose “French Press” grind, expect it to be finer than usual, so you’re guaranteed good extraction. Some ultra fine coffee particles will make it through the screen and create a flavorful, albeit slightly opaque cup. In other words, we choose flavor over aesthetics. If you want to keep your cup looking cleaner, choose a pour over grind.

If you don’t see your preferred grind in the options then simply let us know in the notes section at checkout and we’d be happy to grind it for your favorite brewing method.
